Duties include development of superior germplasm/cultivars which will enhance the productivity, improve the product quality, and/or decrease production costs associate with cotton production in Texas. Wayne SmithThis program cooperates with other disciplines and other agronomists in efforts to achieve this goal. Close working ties are in place with Research and Extension Centers at Weslaco, Corpus Christi, Uvalde, Dallas, Vernon (Chillicothe), the Stiles Research Foundation at Thrall, and Lubbock. Primary geographical areas of responsibilities are central and south Texas with secondary goals aimed at all cotton producing areas of Texas and the United States. Breeding goals include enhancement of yield and fiber quality potential, and resistance/tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Teaching responsibilities include graduate level plant breeding and undergraduate level crop production.
