Texas is the leading grain sorghum producer of the United States with a production of more than 86 million cwt. in 2003. My goal is to provide growers in Texas with relevant, research-based information
that aids them maintaining their position as leading, least-cost producer of quality sorghum. As State Specialist I serve in a coordinating role for campus and center based scientists in developing and implementing educational and applied research programs as well as a liaison to the sorghum industry. I am co-leading the State Grain Sorghum and Corn Hybrid Testing Program. In this program we evaluate sorghum and corn hybrid performance at 12 locations throughout Texas under contrasting climatic and edaphic conditions. Our goal is to provide growers and the feedgrain industry with unbiased agronomic performance results aiding them in adoption of improved genetic material which is crucial to increase productivity and competitiveness to satisfy demand for food of a growing population. As Cropping Systems Specialist I investigate the interactions among production practices and environmental factors with the goal to further economically and environmentally sustainable crop production.
